Onions (oignon) are garden-grown vegetables  full of flavor and texture! They are popular and long-lasting root vegetables that can be grown in many climates.

Method of plantation:
  • We grow them in loose, sandy soil during the cooler periods of the growing season—winter because they can tolerate frost.
  • Depending on the variety and local growing conditions, onions (oignon) may take anywhere from 4 to 6 months to mature.
  • Twist or cut off all but ½ inch of the tops, scrub off any dirt under cold running water, and air-dry, in order to store these freshly-harvested vegetables.
  • Seal in airtight plastic bags, and refrigerate.
  • Store it in your refrigerator.
  • Store in tubs of moist sand or dry sawdust in a cool, dry area.
  • Leave mature onions in the soil for temporary storage if the ground will not freeze and pests aren’t a problem.

Avoid:

  • Do not simply put fresh onion (oignon)
  • in the refrigerator.
WIT & WISDOM:
  • Yes, you can plant a sprouted onion (oignon), though you won’t get more onions (oignon) from it. You will get lots of tasty green sprouts, however! Here’s how to do it:
    1. Fill a pot with potting soil and make a hole in the middle that is about the depth and width of the onion (oignon).
    2. Place the vegetable in the hole and cover it with soil.
    3. Water and put the pot in a sunny spot.
    4. Harvest the green sprouts as needed for cooking.
