Empowering Youth with Skills for Sustainable Agriculture and Environmental Stewardship

Empowering Youth for sustainable world

Agriculture has long been the cornerstone of Africa’s economy, employing approximately 43.8% of the population as of 2020. However, many individuals are hesitant to pursue careers in this sector due to non-competitive salaries, the physical demands of agricultural work, and a lack of information about the industry.

In Mauritius, agriculture contributes to around 3.5% of the country’s gross domestic product (GDP), with a significant portion of agricultural products being imported.  To instill in young children the importance of agriculture and equip them with the knowledge, skills, values, and attitudes necessary to live in, develop, and support a sustainable and resource-efficient society, the Mkids Organization, a member of the GNRC, has launched an initiative to educate children about traditional rooftop farming.

The ‘traditional farming on rooftops’ program is specifically designed for urban residents, where many of the Mkids beneficiaries are located, as farming is often unfamiliar in these areas. The initiative aims to educate children about traditional farming techniques, fostering a connection to nature and an appreciation for the origins of food. In addition to teaching traditional farming, Mkids also plans to provide children with knowledge and skills in aquaponics, a method that involves cultivating fish and plants together in a constructed, recirculating ecosystem that utilizes natural bacterial cycles to convert fish waste into plant nutrition. This project will empower children with knowledge of environmentally friendly and sustainable farming practices, involving them as stakeholders in driving positive change in society.

“Our projects are designed to promote a comprehensive understanding of agriculture and environmental stewardship, encouraging individuals to make informed decisions that positively impact their communities and the environment.” – Mkids
