The Ministry of Agro-industry finalised a plan to provide financial assistance to farmers for the purchase of fertilizer, including sugar cane cultivators. This was announced by the Minister of Agro-industry Manish Gobin on October 27 2021, in Grand Bois during a check ceremony to tea farmers under the Winter’s Allowance Scheme. More than a thousand of farmers will benefit from this aid for a total amount of nearly Rs 3, 2 million.
During a meeting on the following week, Friday, 5 November 2021, the Cabinet agreed that the allowance for fertilizer for cane cultivators will increase from Rs 500 per 25-kilo bag to Rs 980 this year. Moreover Maneesh Gobin explained that this is because of the considerable increase in the price of fertilizers. Around 7,000 farmers are affected and will benefit from this allowance, under the ‘Advance Fertilizer Scheme’. This event ended on a high-note with a voucher ceremony at the headquarters of the MCIA – Mauritius Cane Industry Authority.
