Lemongrass (citronelle), or Cymbopogon citratus, is a member of the Gramineae or Poaceae family. However, cymbopogon means boat-beard in Greek. It is a long-lived, fragrant plant that is indigenous to South India and also Sri Lanka. It now spreads rapidly over Asia and tropical America. Cut slightly dried lemongrass (citronelle)  to extract essential oils, as well as for therapeutic purposes. It  might help prevent the growth of some bacteria as well as yeast. However, it also contains substances that are thought to relieve pain and swelling, reduce fever, improve levels of sugar and cholesterol in the blood, stimulate the uterus and menstrual flow, as well as have antioxidant properties.
