Sunfarming Africa shines at Solar Week Mauritius 2024, winning two awards for its agrivoltaic project. The 200 kWp Agrisolar Training Centre in Gros Cailloux, Mauritius, earned recognition in the following categories: The Best Solar Project of the Year: Agrivoltaic and Outstanding Service Innovation in Solar: EPC.
Mr. Beemadoo, CEO of the Mauritius Renewable Energy Agency, presented the awards to the Project Manager Chetan Jankee and Agronomist Jeevesh Sewdee.
The Agrisolar Research and Training Centre was commissioned under the National Scheme for Emerging/Innovative Renewable Energy Technologies (NSEIRET). Moreover, this program, led by MARENA, aims to promote innovative renewable energy solutions in Mauritius. It is supported by the Central Electricity Board , the Economic Development Board, and the Mauritius Research and Innovation Council .
To add, the Agrisolar Centre serves as a platform for research and training, fostering collaboration with local institutions. During its installation phase, 60 students from the University of Mauritius and Université des Mascareignes participated.
The innovative agrivoltaic system installed by SUNfarming integrates energy production with agricultural processes. In addition this dual-use technology helps generate solar energy while supporting food production. Hence by optimizing land use, it promotes sustainable farming and enhances local self-sufficiency.
Furthermore this project offers considerable benefits to the local economy. It strengthens the renewable energy sector while encouraging sustainable agricultural practices. The agrivoltaic system also opens new opportunities for local communities to develop skills in renewable energy technologies.
