In celebration of World Food Day 2024, the Food and Agricultural Research and Extension Institute (FAREI) launched a new variety of papaya, ‘Goldie.’ The launch occurred during a sales exhibition organized by the Ministry of Agro-Industry and Food Security at the Agricultural Services in Réduit, Mauritius.
This event not only showcased the new papaya variety but also provided a platform for local agricultural producers. These included planters, breeders, tea producers, beekeepers, and small and medium enterprises. They had the chance to present and sell their products.
The ‘Goldie’ papaya is known for its dwarf size and ability to produce large fruits. Typically, these fruits weigh around 2.5 kilograms. The papaya is also recognized for its firm, sweet, red-orange flesh. This variety is especially well-suited for cultivation in sub-humid and humid regions. As a result, it offers local farmers a valuable opportunity to diversify their crops.
The sales exhibition, which ran until October 19, 2024, allowed attendees to explore a wide range of locally available agro-products. Additionally, it offered insights into the growth potential within the agro-processing sector. By engaging the public, the event aimed to increase awareness of local agricultural offerings. Furthermore, it encouraged the development of the industry.
