What You Need:

  • A fully grown herb plant
  • A pair of scissors
  • A glass of water
  • A pot filled with compost

How to Take Herb Cuttings:

  1. Select a Stem
Choose a green stem from your fully-grown herb plant. Snip just below a leaf node (the spot where leaves emerge from the stem), ensuring the cutting is about 3-4 inches long.

  2. Prepare the Cutting
Remove the lower leaves from the cutting and place it into a glass of water.

  3. Encourage Root Growth
Position the glass on a sunny windowsill, changing the water every few days. Over the next few weeks, roots should start to form at the base of the cutting.

  4. Plant the Cutting
Once roots have developed, it’s time to plant. Fill a pot loosely with compost, then make a hole in the soil with your finger. Gently place the cutting in the hole and carefully firm the compost around it.

  5. Water and Watch It Grow
Water the newly planted cutting and watch your herb plant flourish! Rosemary, a hardy herb, can provide you with a supply through the winter, and when it flowers in spring, bees will love it too.

This method works well for other woody herbs like basil and sage, so you can expand your herb garden with minimal effort!
