Mauritius has about 1,350 hectares for fruit cultivation. The annual production of fruits is around 29,000 tonnes. Despite a rich variety of locally produced fruit, each year a third is lost before it is even harvested. To prevent this waste, the Ministry of Industrial Development, SMEs and Cooperatives is moving forward with a project called: Fruit Processing Plant. The fruits can be processed and preserved in different ways. Rs 4 million have been allocated for this purpose for 4 companies will operate there. Proposals have already been submitted to the ministry and they are currently under evaluation.
