From Soil to Strength: The Women Cultivating Hope in Ferney

Women in Mauritius cultivating hope

Creating SELA's model farm

In Ferney, the “Women Cultivating Hope in Ferney,” a group from South East Ladies Agro (SELA), turned adversity into opportunity. They created a thriving “Model Farm” at the Agri-Hub. Their journey shows resilience and solidarity as they rebuild their lives. Moreover, they cultivate hope through organic farming.

from disaster to new beginning

In 2020, the MV Wakashio disaster struck Pointe-d’Esny, spilling oil into the pristine waters of the southern region. This catastrophe shattered the livelihoods of many families, especially those dependent on the sea. Faced with an uncertain future, these women turned to social worker Sandy Monrose. She offered them a fresh start through farming, giving them a new path to rebuild their lives.

a community effrot

Sandy, together with 10 other women from various communities, took charge of the “Model Farm” at the Agri-Hub in Ferney. They received support and training from the Food & Agricultural Research & Extension Institute (FAREI) and Le Vélo Vert Academy. With this guidance, the women dedicated themselves fully to organic farming.

Daily life on farm

By August 2024, their efforts had transformed 3,500 m² of land into a productive farm. The women shared the harvests among themselves and sold any surplus to neighbors. Additionally, their time spent working in the garden, followed by communal lunches, has become a source of strength and camaraderie.

Harvesting hope

In this garden, the women found more than just a livelihood; they discovered a sanctuary of resilience and hope. By turning their distress into a source of life and solidarity, they are ensuring a better future for themselves and their families.
