The Zero Kilometer Project

Boosting food security in mauritius

Eighteen local entrepreneurs from the southern region of Mauritius recently completed an agroecological farming training program at Bel Ombre. The initiative, named “Zero Kilometer” project, was launched by Agrïa and funded by Heritage Villas Valriche. The project’s main goal is to promote sustainable agriculture and create job opportunities for the local community.

Under the guidance of FORMA’TERRA, an agricultural training institute based in Réunion, the participants established two vegetable gardens. Each garden covers 540 square meters. The entrepreneurs are now entering the final phase of their three-month training program. The training includes 114 hours, combining practical skills with theoretical knowledge on Sustainable Tropical Agriculture.

Thierry Sauzier, CEO of Agrïa, explained that the project aims to inspire sustainable business practices. It also promotes a circular economy in the Bel Ombre area. The vegetables grown will be sold to hotels within the Heritage Resorts group. This ensures that visitors enjoy locally sourced meals, supporting the local economy.

Didier Ramay, a professor at FORMA’TERRA, emphasized the limitations of conventional farming. He stated that industrial farming harms soil health and human well-being. Agroecology offers an alternative, reducing the use of harmful chemicals. It also encourages local farming practices that benefit both the environment and the community.

The final phase of the “Zero Kilometer” project will teach entrepreneurs how to care for their gardens until the next FORMA’TERRA visit in November. This training will ensure they have the knowledge and skills to maintain the gardens successfully. As a result, the entrepreneurs will continue contributing to the growth of sustainable agriculture in the region. The project empowers them to support local food systems and promote environmental sustainability.
