The project aimed to create a Biodiversity Stewardship Programme in Mauritius that would involve private landowners and businesses in taking care of and conserving biodiversity on their lands. The initiative included working with landowners, private sector representatives, and conservation leaders to find effective ways to manage biodiversity that fit the local needs.
It also looked at successful stewardship models and incentive programs from other countries to find strategies that could work in Mauritius. A toolbox with both financial and non-financial incentives was developed to encourage participation in biodiversity stewardship. In the end, a detailed proposal for the programme was drafted to help implement it.
This programme provides a clear plan for engaging private landowners and businesses in the long-term protection of Mauritius’ unique ecosystems. By encouraging cooperation between landowners and conservation groups, the initiative aims to improve biodiversity protection and aid in restoring ecosystems on private lands.
This effort not only helps preserve Mauritius’ rich natural heritage but also promotes sustainable practices that benefit both the environment and local communities.
