MRIC Pioneers Agricultural Revitalization Through Advanced Technology

Agricultural Technology Innovation Mauritius

Harnessing IoT, AI, and Robotics to Transform Mauritius' Agriculture

The Mauritius Research and Innovation Council (MRIC) is at the forefront of Agricultural Technology Innovation Mauritius by integrating cutting-edge technologies such as the Internet of Things (IoT), Artificial Intelligence (AI), and robotics. This initiative aims to tackle major challenges in the sector, including labor shortages, climate change, and the need for automation. Additionally, it seeks to inspire young people to pursue careers in agriculture.

Project Overview: A half-day seminar focusing on IoT, AI, and robotics will soon be held in Ebene. This event will highlight how these technologies can enhance agricultural practices in Mauritius. The project unfolds in three key stages:

Stage 1: Acquisition and Integration
Initially, the project involved acquiring four critical IoT devices: an agricultural drone sprayer, an automated irrigation system, an automated weather station, and Farmbot robots. The team then integrated their software to ensure seamless operation. This foundational step is crucial for the project’s success.

Stage 2: Configuration and Testing
Next, the team focused on configuring and fine-tuning the devices. Despite facing challenges such as complex software and adverse weather conditions, they successfully verified the technology’s functionality. This stage was essential for ensuring that the technology meets the project’s requirements.

Stage 3: Data Management and Application Development
In the final stage, the team extracted and integrated data from the devices into a centralized platform. They also developed a new mobile application to help users understand the data easily. This innovative approach enhances the usability of the technology.

Public Awareness and Outreach:

To raise awareness, MRIC organized an eight-month series of outreach events. These events took place in corporate spaces, secondary schools, the University of Mauritius, and among local farmers and planters. By engaging with various communities, MRIC aimed to inform and involve stakeholders in the initiative.

Agro-Tech Park at Mon Dessert Alma:

Neos Core Ltd has established an agro-tech park at Mon Dessert Alma, showcasing emerging technologies. This site aims to present the latest advancements and guide clients through their use. Funding for the project came from the Innovation Boost Grant provided by MRIC.

MRIC’s efforts aim to modernize Mauritius’ agricultural sector, making it more resilient and efficient. By embracing these advanced technologies, the initiative strives to create a sustainable and attractive field for future generations.
