Growing Your Own Garlic: A How-To Guide

There’s nothing quite like growing your own garlic from your own garden. If you have a sunny balcony in winter, you can probably grow garlic, too! Early November is the ideal time to plant, so grab bulbs now while the selection is good. Look for garlic bulbs that feel dense and smooth, free from blemishes.

Prepare the Soil

Prepping the soil ahead of time makes planting much easier. Add a couple of inches of aged compost to help with drainage, and consider using a low- or no-nitrogen fertilizer. Loosen the soil to at least 8 inches with a garden fork to give roots room to spread. Water the soil a day or two before planting so it’s damp on planting day. If planting in a container, choose one that’s at least 15 inches deep for healthy garlic growth.

Irrigation Setup

If using drip irrigation, place the irrigation line on the soil with 6-inch emitter spacing. Position cloves close to the emitters. Adding a shut-off valve at the beginning of the line can help manage water flow as harvest time nears.

By preparing your soil, choosing the right crops, and staying informed, you can make the most of your  planting and set yourself up for a successful season ahead. And remember, growing your own garlic can be a rewarding addition to your spring planting, offering fresh, homegrown flavor and added sustainability to your farm.
