Feeding the Future: Mauritius’ Bold Production Plan 2024-2030!

On October 8, 2024, Leena Gooraya-Poligadoo reported on the Ministry of Agro-Industry’s strategic plan aimed at increasing livestock production in Mauritius from 2024 to 2030, focusing on honey, deer, goat, sheep, and pork.

 The Ministry has set an ambitious target of producing 800 tonnes of deer meat in the next six years. Deer farming is becoming increasingly significant in Mauritius, with deer meat now a favored source of red meat among various communities. Currently, deer are raised on 25,000 hectares, with plans to enhance production through measures such as extending the hunting season, implementing a stray dog control plan, and establishing regional slaughterhouses.

For goat and sheep farming, the goal is to produce 90 tonnes of meat. To achieve this, the Ministry plans to import breeding animals, enhance productivity through artificial insemination, and improve marketing systems. In 2022, local goat production reached 18.8 tonnes, while sheep production totaled 25.7 tonnes.

In beekeeping, the Ministry aims to increase honey production to 60 tonnes by 2030. Key strategies include managing varroa infestations and expanding the planting of honey-producing plants. Thereby enhancing Mauritiuus’ bold production plan 2024-2030.

For the pork sector, the Ministry intends to maintain production levels while improving meat quality. In 2022, local pork production was 583 tonnes, supplemented by significant imports. Proposed initiatives include enhancing feeding practices and establishing a waste treatment system.

Mauritius’ Bold Production Plan 2024-2030, led by the Ministry, aims to boost livestock farming, food security, and support local farmers by 2030.
