The Event

The presentation of the key findings from the Smart Agriculture Project aimed at reducing the use of pesticides in subsistence farming. This was discussed at an event organized by the Mauritius Chamber of Agriculture. This event took place at the Farmers Training School in Wooton, which is part of the Food and Agricultural Research and Extension Institute (FAREI).

Project Budget

This project, funded by the MRIC and the EU in partnership with FAREI and CIRAD, had a budget of approximately Rs 20 million and spanned four years. Its overarching objective is to enhance the nation’s food security by promoting sustainable agricultural practices.

Issues in Agriculture

During the presentation, Mr. Massimiliano Messi, the Executive Director of the MRIC, emphasized the challenges confronting the agricultural sector amidst the COVID-19 pandemic. He highlighted the urgent need for new research and techniques to ensure global food security. Especially with rising food prices due to conflicts such as the Russia-Ukraine war. Mr. Messi assured continued support from the EU for Mauritius in terms of financing, research, and training to improve production methods and tackle climate change impacts.

Professor Theesan Bahorun, the Secretary General of the MCA, shared concerning statistics from the Food and Agricultural Organization. The statistics indicate a significant increase in pesticide use in Mauritius. He stressed the detrimental effects of these chemicals on soil quality and consumer health. This highlights the importance of transitioning to smart agriculture practices to minimize these risks.
